ABOUT THE SHOW:

Andrea Bianconi reconstructs the world by means of its very own ruins. His oeuvre is an incessant wandering amidst dreams, obsessions, risks, surprises, and an endless roaming among the fragments of words and things.  He explores the spectacle that is delirium and destruction, assemblage and disassemblage in order to reach an apparent reality that Bianconi describes as the "Fantasy Ridge dell'Everest."

The Italian Embassy in Washington, DC, is pleased to present in its own Hall Piazza Italia, during the European Union Embassies Open House Day, a site specific installation by the artist Andrea Bianconi, entitled “ Living (A Charmed Life)”, which narrates the history  of Italy for the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification.  
The time views as a collection of messages, which made up history.

The IS-LAND project by Andrea Bianconi - developed for VOLTA NY - is made up both of an installation bearing the same title and of a performance (A Charmed Life). It points quite clearly to the research path followed by the artist.
His work has developed as an unrelenting analysis of the relationship between uniqueness of the ego and multiple identities. Starting from autobiography, this analysis has moved up to speculative reflections on the human being in its individual and social components.

The artist, dressed as a boxer, is fighting a leaf dangling from a thread against a green background. He jumps around and hits the leaf until he exhausts himself in this ridiculous act trying to defy a fragile piece of nature. In the end, the leaf falls off. But the boxer is out of the picture too. The boxing match symbolizes our continues struggle with the meaning of life, exploring questions like, What makes humans want to change everything that nature intended? Why are we so aggressive with the environment?
